A weekend in Vancouver

Report by Sabrina H.

After a few weeks in Nanaimo, a friend from Germany came over to visit me in the beginningVancouver Capilano_Sabrina Haible_klein of February. Besides a really nice weekend trip to Tofino we also spent a weekend in Vancouver. I took the ferry from Departure Bay in Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay and got Downtown by bus which costs around $20 in total. I met my friend in our hotel which was downtown near Stanley Park and also near Robson Street, the main shopping street in Vancouver. This turned out to be the perfect starting point for seeing the main attractions in Vancouver.

On our first day, we only went shopping and walked around downtown as my friend was jet lagged and tired from the long flight. On our second day, we took the free shuttle bus to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and even though it was raining during the whole day we really enjoyed the Park and its amazing landscape. We got on the shuttle on Robson Street, however, it has many other stops, too.

In the evening, we went to Rogers Arena as we wanted to try to get some tickets for the game Vancouver Canucks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins that was on that night. We were lucky and really enjoyed the game. The atmosphere and everything around the game made it an even more amazing experience. We also could not resist to buy a Vancouver Canucks scarf and stickers. It was just part of the whole hockey experience. Even though the tickets for a game are rather expensive it was a unique experience and we definitely think it was worth it.

The next day the weather was finally better and we spent almost the whole day in Stanley Park. It was so nice, quiet and just beautiful. First, we only walked around, saw the harbor and the lighthouse, and spent some time by the water. After that, we visited the dolphins and white whales in the Vancouver Aquarium which was also really interesting because we learnt a lot about the local sea dweller. Then, we went to English Bay, a beach near downtown Vancouver and went shopping on Robson Street again where we also found many souvenir shops, before we then had a great last dinner at the „Cactus Club Cafe“.

“one of the most amazing cities in the world”

We really enjoyed our time in Vancouver and even thought we could have spent more time there, however, I had to go back to University, which was the reason why we had to go back to Nanaimo. During my semester here at VIU I have now visited Vancouver many times and consider it as one of the most amazing cities in the world.
