Advantages of a Semester Abroad
What does a Semester Abroad do for me?
You are probably asking yourself whether a study abroad semester is right for you – so do many students. For a number of students it is mandatory to study abroad, as their study program demands time spent in another country. However, what does a semester abroad do for the students who take the opportunity to go abroad during their study programs? We would like to give you some answers to your question of why a semester abroad can be beneficial and a chance worth taking:
Will I learn to speak English fluently during my semester abroad?
Most Europeans do remember some of their school English and are able to find their way around during a vacation spent in a different country or can to some extent communicate with foreigners. But when it comes to understanding English professional articles or movies, or just calling an English-speaking client on the phone and negotiating in English many non-native speakers lack confidence, even after completing secondary school. Students who have spent a semester abroad in Australia, Canada, or the USA tend to be more self-confident in situations that require English proficiency. Having used English all day and on a daily basis – discussing, reading and writing in class and with classmates, shopping and traveling – they have not only become fluent in English and have learned to understand native English speakers without any problems, but have also acquired expert knowledge in their study fields in passing – without memorizing vocabulary and grammar structures for hours on end.
Why does a semester abroad help with my study program?
The university systems in Australia, Canada and the USA are structured quite differently from that in European countries. Learning contents are imparted in different ways and key aspects often vary depending on the country. International students gain valuable insight into alternative ways of thinking. A semester abroad gives you the opportunity to extend your professional knowledge and skills and to view situations from a different perspective. Especially universities in English-speaking countries tend to grade the active participation in class, which many European students find to take some getting used to. But don’t worry: You will soon realize that a European perspective and your experiences will be appreciated by your professors and class mates, and that a lot of interesting discussions will arise this way. These are experiences you will benefit from: Back at your home university you will impress your class mates and lecturers with your newly acquired self-confidence and your intellectual input.
What does a Semester Abroad do for my Career?
At renowned and popular companies, hundreds of graduates apply for one job opening. Applicants who manage to stick out from the crowd have a clear advantage – but how can you distinguish yourself? If your CV shows that you completed a semester abroad, you are already ahead of many competitors in the run at your dream job. Human resources managers often rate graduates who have spent a semester at a university abroad highly, since they accredit the following qualities to them: fluent English skills, open-minded and adjustable to unknown situations, empathic to different perspectives and to other cultures, in possession of an international network, and other positive features. Having studied abroad often helps to set yourself apart from the masses and to be called for a job interview, but most importantly: you will have the maturity and the self-confidence to give a good account of yourself and to impress your future boss.
What does a Semester Abroad for me personally?
Everyone who studied abroad will tell you that this time was a unique and unforgettable experience, particularly connected with personal memories. Students who go abroad for one or more semesters tend to grow to be more mature and more independent. And who wouldn’t? After all, to study abroad means to establish yourself in a foreign country and culture, a fresh start, and being on your own (at least initially). But a semester abroad enables you to immerse into this new culture and to experience it first-hand, to make friends with locals and with people from around the world, and to explore another part of the world. You dare to go on an adventure that lets you excel, try new things, and makes you stronger. Not only will you come to know a foreign country, but you will come to know your home and yourself in a new way. A semester abroad is a courageous step very worth taking.

My term abroad at ICMS in Sydney was an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience. Especially in today’s globalized world, this experience will open doors for my future. It’s great to meet so many different people from all over the world and study together – a fantastic time that I will always remember! I would like to tell future ICMS students to fully embark on their adventure abroad and to make the most of their time Down Under.
I experienced a totally different way of living on Vancouver Island as compared to Germany. Canadians are much more open, always willing to help and really friendly. The landscape and natural beauty surrounding the VIU campus is just breathtaking. I feel so happy here that I almost don’t want to go back home.
The various activities offered to students as well as the gym at VIU gave me the possibility to explore the island and to get to know other students.
Studying abroad I got to know the USA as a ‘local’ – not just as a tourist – and I now have a different, larger picture of the country, culture and people. My studies at National University eventually helped me get my current job in a very international team with people from all around the world.
The small class sizes at National University allow for interactive course settings and an engaging atmosphere and classrooms are state-of-the-art.
