The High School at VIU – Information
The High School (THS) was founded in 1996 and is located on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia at Canada’s fascinating west coast. There are 70 students currently enrolled at the High School of VIU, all in grade 10, 11 or 12. THS students come from Canada and 15 other countries in the world and the High School at Vancouver Island University is anything but your average high school. Of course you can study the same subjects and courses here as at other Canadian high schools and receive your high school diploma with your graduation. But THS offers amazing benefits: The High School is uniquely situated on the university campus at Vancouver Island University. THS students therefore have access to university facilities, the library and sports facilities, and often come in contact with university students of VIU. Another great advantage of studying at THS is the chance to transfer directly to Vancouver Island University after successful graduation from THS, without having to complete an acceptance process, in case you would like to stay in Canada for longer. Furthermore, the High School at Vancouver Island University offers a variety of English courses, summer programs and a number of attractive leisure time activities for students.

Due to its central location, Nanaimo – the coastal city that hosts the High School – provides students with the chance to explore big city life in Vancouver or to visit nearby cities like Victoria or Whistler, all within easy and fast reach. Nanaimo itself is smaller harbor city with a population of approximately 80,000 and provides an ideal atmosphere for students with its friendly flair. Students can play all kinds of sports here: a swimming pool with Olympic dimensions, two ice skating rinks as well as fields for playing soccer, handball and volleyball are located in the close proximity of the High School.
Start Dates at the High School at Vancouver Island University
You can start your semester of year at the High School at Vancouver Island University either in February or in September every year. Additionally, there is the chance to complete the High School’s Summer Camp – a 1 to 6 weeks long summer language program.

Applications are accepted all year round. However, to ensure a smooth and timely application process we recommend handing in your complete application documents at least 3 to 4 months prior to your preferred start date at THS.
You want to improve your English skills and plan to study in Canada for a short period of time only? The High School’s summer program might be perfect for you. You will be placed in a group according to your English skills and you will have the opportunity to make use of the leisure time activities organized by the High School and by Vancouver Island University. Summer Camp courses are one to six weeks long and you will surely experience a fantastic time in Canada. Moreover, your teachers and classmates back home will be baffled by your great English skills after you have returned home.
High School in Canada – Accommodation
THS students are accommodated in Canadian host families through an excellent home stay program for their semester or year in Canada. Living in a Canadian host family has many advantages. Not only will you improve your English language skills rapidly and learn a lot about Canadian culture, but you will also have the chance to gain a second family and a home away from home.
