The preparation for my semester abroad started at my home university, the University of M\u00fcnster. Since Westcliff University is a partner institution, the initial application process went through the International Office in M\u00fcnster, where strict deadlines had to be met. After submitting my documents, I received my acceptance very quickly.<\/p>\n
Following the acceptance, I contacted my organization and advisor, Victoria, to coordinate the next steps. A central part was the Learning Agreement. I had to select all intended courses in advance and get them approved by both the organization and my home university to guarantee a smooth credit transfer.<\/p>\n
To fund the stay, I applied for scholarships available through the university and external organizations. I successfully secured a scholarship, which provided significant financial relief for my time in California.<\/p>\n
Applying for the J-1 visa requires thorough planning and should be started as early as possible. First, I had to fill out the comprehensive online application on the US Embassy website, entering all necessary personal data. This process also involves two mandatory upfront payments, including the SEVIS fee.<\/p>\n
Once the payments were processed, I booked an in-person interview appointment at the US Consulate in Frankfurt. The appointment went smoothly, and a few days later, my passport was mailed back to my home address with the physical visa integrated inside.<\/p>\n
I lived in Long Beach, which was the perfect location. I was extremely lucky to find my apartment through a personal contact who rents out properties in the area, making the search very easy for me. However, for future students, I can highly recommend the following strategies:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Platforms: Check Airbnb and Facebook Marketplace, where many apartments and rooms are regularly listed.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Moving in Together: Try to move in with someone or find flatmates. Sharing an apartment makes the high Californian living costs much more affordable and gives you more value for your money.<\/p>\n
\u2022 The “Transition” Strategy: Book an Airbnb for the first few weeks, and use the initial time on-site to connect with other students and look for a shared apartment together.<\/p>\n
The preparation phase requires some effort and patience, especially regarding deadlines and bureaucracy. However, with good time management, a clear guide from the university and organization, and proactive planning, the process is completely manageable and lays the foundation for an unforgettable experience.<\/p>\n
