(As of: June 2025)

Important Developments and What They Mean for You

Recently, there have been some changes and discussions regarding the issuance of student visas (F-1/J-1) for the USA. This has led to uncertainty among many German students, especially because interview appointments at the consulates are scarce.

Important: There is no reason to panic. Such situations are not uncommon and can also arise from political processes, staffing shortages, or seasonal demand peaks. Latest News Overview:

June 2025 – Student Visa Interviews Resume with New Social Media Rules

The U.S. Department of State has officially resumed the student visa interviews that were paused in May (Source: Washington Post).

What’s new?
Applicants for F, M, or J visas are now required to make their social media profiles publicly accessible. U.S. consulates will conduct extended online screenings.

  • Social media requirement: Profiles on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X (Twitter), TikTok, etc., must be publicly visible. Private or hidden accounts may lead to visa denial.
  • Recommendation: In addition to your I-20/DS-2019, financial proof, and DS-160 form, prepare your digital profiles to present a transparent and trustworthy appearance.
  • Appointments are available again, but capacity is limited – check the consulate websites (Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich) frequently.
  • Early planning remains crucial: book flights only after receiving your visa.
  • Keep your host university informed – many institutions assist students in securing visa appointments during periods of limited availability.

Background: According to U.S. authorities, the new rule aims to detect potential threats related to extremist content at an early stage.

May 2025 - Worldwide Suspension of Visa Interview Appointments

The U.S. Department of State has suspended new visa interview appointments for students worldwide.

What does this mean for German students?
Students currently wishing to apply for a US student visa may not receive new appointments at the US consulates in Germany for several weeks. This can lead to delays in their timeline.

  • Recommendation: Prepare all documents (especially the I-20/DS-2019 and proof of financial support) completely. Submit the DS-160 form online as soon as you have received your I-20/DS-2019.
  • Check the websites of the US consulates (Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich) for available interview appointments daily and at different times. New slots are often released without prior notice.
  • Find out about possible interview waiver programs (postal application without a personal interview) if you have had a US visa before. The criteria for this are strict.
  • Many universities actively support appointment scheduling or can intervene in case of bottlenecks - keep your host university informed.
  • Plan for buffer times and book flights only after receiving the visa.

May 2025 - AI Use for Social Media Profile Verification

The US government is using artificial intelligence as part of the "Catch and Revoke" initiative to analyze the social media activities of international students. Social media profiles from the last five years must be declared in the DS-160 form.

What does this mean for German students?
Public statements on social networks can play a role in visa decisions.

  • Recommendation: Review your public profiles (Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc.) for content that could be misinterpreted or considered controversial. This also applies to shared content or likes.
  • Be aware that comments in German can also be analyzed.
  • Caution is advised, especially with politically sensitive topics (e.g., international conflicts, US domestic policy). A politically neutral and professional online presence is advantageous.
  • Check your privacy settings. Content visible only to friends is generally less problematic, but there is no guarantee.
  • Do not delete profiles shortly before applying, as this could arouse suspicion. Be honest in your DS-160 application.

May 2025 - Stricter Regulations for Chinese STEM Students

Visas for Chinese students in security-relevant fields of study (STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) are being increasingly scrutinized and sometimes revoked.

What does this mean for German students?
This specific regulation primarily affects Chinese citizens and has no direct negative impact on German STEM students.

  • On the contrary: Many US universities actively recruit European, and especially German, applicants in technology and engineering sciences to promote diversity and international research collaborations.
  • German students in STEM subjects continue to be very welcome in the USA.
  • Nevertheless, it is advisable to be able to clearly present your academic goals and the relevance of your studies in the USA during the visa interview.

April 2025 - New Executive Orders on Visa Revocations for "Antisemitic" Statements

Under Executive Order 14188, visas can be revoked if students make public antisemitic statements - the definition of antisemitism may follow the US interpretation, which can be based on, for example, the IHRA definition.

What does this mean for German students?
Freedom of speech is a valuable asset, but in the USA, there are limits, especially in the context of visa regulations.

  • Recommendation: Inform yourself about the US definition and perception of antisemitism. This may differ from the German debate.
  • Be particularly sensitive and respectful in public statements, discussions on campus, or on social media concerning the Middle East conflict or Jewish life.
  • Critical political opinions considered legitimate in Germany might be interpreted differently in the USA and, in the worst case, have visa consequences.
  • This applies to activities in the USA as well as online postings made from Germany.
  • When in doubt: Less is more. Focus on your studies and intercultural exchange.

March 2025 - Extended Post-Study Stay (OPT)

The USA allows international graduates an extended stay after their studies to gain practical work experience under the "Optional Practical Training" (OPT) program.

What does this mean for German students?
This is a very positive development and a great advantage of studying in the US!

  • After successful graduation (Bachelor, Master, PhD), German students with an F-1 visa can apply for a work permit in the USA:
    • Up to 12 months for most fields of study.
    • Up to 36 months (12 months initial + 24 months STEM Extension) for graduates in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics).
  • OPT offers the chance to gain valuable work experience in the USA, apply specialized knowledge, and expand professional networks.
  • The work must be directly related to the field of study.
  • This is a clear advantage compared to many other study destinations and can significantly improve career prospects.
  • Inform yourself early at your US university about the exact OPT application procedures.

What our universities in the USA are saying:

University of North Carolina Wilmington

"Given the recent updates regarding the temporary pause in student visa appointments, we know there are concerns about the timeliness of receiving your U.S. visa for August. Our office and universities across the United States are monitoring the situation carefully and will provide updates. For students who already secured visa appointments, the U.S. Department of State spokesperson confirmed that they are still following the normal visa application process.

Students who have not yet received a visa appointment may face delays in scheduling in the upcoming weeks, as embassies await further guidance on the process. If the communication changes, our office will provide an immediate update. At UNCW, we like to say: “Once a Seahawk, always a Seahawk.” You are valuable members of our community and we look forward to welcoming you very soon."

Westcliff University

✅ What we know:
The U.S. State Department is temporarily pausing interviews abroad with foreign citizens applying for student and exchange visas to expand applicants' social media vetting.

❓ What we don’t know:
International education remains a vital force within the United States, and while we cannot know for sure when, we believe interviews are likely to resume relatively quickly.

💡 What this means for you and your students:
Enrollment timelines may be longer than expected, but students will still be able to enroll. We have rolling start dates, and deferrals to future terms won’t incur extra fees or impact admissions decisions. Students also have the option to begin their program online so they don’t lose any time.
