Our UNCW Ambassadors introduce themselves:

Justus H
UNCW Ambassador 2025
Dear future Seahawk,
My name is Justus, I am 21 years old and I am studying for a bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of Münster. I spent my semester abroad in Fall Term 2024 at UNCW – and it was one of the best experiences of my life!
During my semester, I took four economics courses:
– Project Management
– Principles of Operations Management
– International Operations Management
– International Management
The class sizes (7–25 students) were manageable, making it easy to establish direct contact with the professors. One highlight was our visit to the Port of Wilmington as part of the International Operations Management course.
But it wasn't just academically that my time at UNCW shaped me; it was also outside of lectures. The campus is lively and diverse: the huge fitness and sports center is only a few minutes' walk from the apartments. And of course, there's Wrightsville Beach – only about 10 minutes away by car or 30 minutes by bike. One of my fondest memories is swimming and surfing in the Atlantic Ocean even in late November after lectures.
Another advantage: the airport in Wilmington has great connections. This made it easy for me to take weekend trips to New York, Miami, or even Los Angeles (with a layover). The combination of studying, campus life, and leisure activities makes Wilmington unique. Whether surfing until sunset, sporting events on campus, country concerts, or weekend trips—during my semester, I experienced so much and made many new friends.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have about studying, campus life, or life in Wilmington and the US. Even if you just want to hear a few impressions, you can always reach me by email (justus.hassel@gmx.de) or on Instagram (justus_hassel).
Go, Seahawks!
Best regards, I look forward to hearing from you!
Justus

Experiencing a semester abroad at Vancouver Island University
I have always wanted to live in another country for an extended period of time. Canada has always fascinated me, so from the beginning, no other destination was an option for me.

My semester abroad at Vancouver Island University
My semester abroad in Canada was an unforgettable time full of new experiences, challenges and valuable insights. From the preparation and arrival to the academic content and leisure activities, every phase was enriching and educative.

Experience the Christmas Magic in Seattle
Seattle is a recommended weekend getaway during the stay on Vancouver Island. The entire city is festively decorated, and the Christmas markets evoke a sense of home.

Finding accommodation in California
I decided to rent an Airbnb via Airbnb.com. I initially rented the room for a month to see what the location was like and whether the accommodation was suitable for me. The Airbnb was in Lake Forest, the area is very nice and a great residential area, but the distance to the university was too far. The Airbnb is paid in advance.

Comparison of transportation in California – cars, buses and bicycles
A friend and I rented a car from Hertz at the airport at the beginning. It was super easy, as there was a Hertz counter right at the airport. However, the prices for car rental vary greatly. Unfortunately, renting a car in California is not cheap. Especially for drivers under the age of 25, there is always a young driver fee, which can amount to around €250 per month.

Experience California: Road trips in and around California
As you are usually only on campus at Westcliff two to three times a week, it is a great opportunity to explore California and the region in more detail. The region around Irvine, Orange County is beautiful and there is a lot to explore. Laguna and Newport Beach are two particularly beautiful places right by the sea.

Lessons at Westcliff – grades, attendance, structure
During my semester abroad at Westcliff University, I chose four courses with 6 ECTS credits each. I focused on finance and marketing. Attendance is compulsory, which is assessed at 100% and accounts for 2% of the overall grade.
Der Umfang in den verschiedenen Kursen hängt sehr stark von den jeweiligen Professoren ab.

Tips& tricks for your semester abroad at Westcliff University
Your semester abroad is about to start and the anticipation is growing. In the beginning I was very overwhelmed about what exactly I should pack for 4 months. Here are a few tips from me.
