Hi! My name is Tina, I am 28 years old and I study Media Design in Hamburg.

In the Fall Semester 2025, I spent a semester abroad at Vancouver Island University. I completed three courses in the Graphic Arts Department, which offered a perfect mix of practical work, creativity and new perspectives. My favorite course was Packaging Design. In this class, I not only learned a lot about design, but also developed a new understanding of materials, sustainability, and concept development.

What I especially liked about VIU was the open and welcoming culture. Both students and instructors are extremely supportive, respectful and motivating. The campus is beautifully located and there are many activities outside of classes. I particularly enjoyed the university-organized trips such as a trip to the Rocky Mountains or surfing in Tofino, as well as the wide range of clubs. There is something for everyone, from hiking and art to the Eco Club, there is even a D&D club if you're interested. A lot is done to help students connect quickly and feel welcome. The campus theatre is also worth a visit, offering impressive student productions but also events by external groups.

Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, and Canada as a whole truly captured my heart. The combination of studying and having the opportunity to hike, spend time at the beaches, observe wildlife and experience this stunning landscape is truly unique. If I had the choice again, I would definitely choose VIU again.
