Flea Markets in Sydney

Report by Laura B.

When visiting a new city, one of my favourite things to do is to go to flea markets. It is such an easy way to meet locals, find some special souvenirs and just find really good bargains. Therefore, I got to see quite a few different markets in Sydney during my term and would like to introduce my favourites to you in the following:

Paddington Market

Paddington Market_klein2The Paddington Market (395 Oxford St, Paddington) is probably the most well-known markets in Sydney. It opens every Saturday between 10am and 5pm and even stays open if it rains since the major part of it is covered by a rooftop. Most of the stalls sell very unique handmade jewellery, fashion and gifts, especially because a lot of the stallholders have their own boutique or brand. That is why Paddington Markets might be in the upper price range compared to other markets which are offering second hand products. Nevertheless, you might find some special presents and besides that there are nice cafés surrounding the market to make your visit even more interesting.

Glebe Market

The Glebe Market (40 Glebe Point Rd) is a really nice market and also very recommendable. Glebe Point Road is a very interesting street, with lots of good coffee places, international restaurants, bookshops and vintage stores. The market itself runs every Saturday between 10am and 4 pm. It offers quite a huge and diverse range of objects such as CDs, recycled fashion, art and second hand. In addition to that, live bands are regularly playing and you have the possibility to try international food at various stands.

The Rocks Market

The Rocks Market (Playfair Street, George St & Jack Munday Place) takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Since “The Rocks” is a historic area right in the city centre, the market is very central and easy to find. More than 200 stalls offer jewellery, crafts, art, designer and beauty products. There is also a food market in “The Rocks” called Foodies Market, taking place on Fridays from 10am to 4pm. From time to time, but not on a regular basis the Rocks Night Market offers live music, lots of food and shopping stands as well as exhibitions from artists.

Rozelle Market

The Rozelle Market (663 Darling Street) takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 4pm and has the reputation to be Sydney’s favourite second hand, antique and collectable market. Unfortunately, it is not that easy to get there, as you have to catch a bus from the city centre, but I would say that it is worth it as you can find some cheap and very unique pieces at Rozelle.

Finders Keepers Market

The Finders Keepers Market only takes place twice a year, in June and in December. It is situated at the Australian Technology Park in Eveleigh and offers over 150 design and art stalls from local designers. There is also a line-up of live music and you have to pay an entrance fee of 2 AUD.

Rock’n’Roll & Alternative Market

Rock'n Roll Market_kleinThe last market I would like to recommend is the Rock ‘n’ Roll & Alternative Market (Manning Road University of Sydney, Camperdown). This market does not run on a regular basis so you better check the dates online. It takes place in a building of the Sydney University, is spread over three levels, and has an entrance fee of 5 AUD. It is actually more than just a market as it offers a great entertainment line-up, a photo exhibition, a rock ‘n’ roll vehicle display and lots of alternative and vintage fashion. There are even retro hair and make-up stylists as well as a traditional barber.
