Football and Sports in San Diego

Report by Christian D.

Besides Baseball, Basketball and Hockey, American Football is one of the four most famous sports in the USA. Unfortunately, San Diego has no NBA Basketball and no hockey team. The Padres (Baseball) and the Chargers (Football) are the most common sports teams in San Diego. The baseball season ended right after I arrived in San Diego so I only got in touch with the Chargers and American Football. I really recommend watching a game of the San Diego Chargers in the Qualcomm, it is an unbelievable atmosphere and you will like it.

Go Chargers!

But the tickets for those NFL games are quite expensive. You could buy these tickets on www.chargers.com. From my point of view it is better to look for some cheap tickets on www.craigslist.com. Private sellers and dealers offer tickets on this website and you often have a chance to get some cheap ones. The Chargers are a pretty good football team, sadly they did not reach a playoff spot this season but they played a pretty good season. The NFL season starts in October and ends after Christmas. In January there are the playoff games and the Super Bowl.

College Football

Another opportunity to watch football in the “Finest city of America” is the college team of SDSU. In the US it is not common that professional teams have youth teams like we have it in Germany with our soccer teams. Most universities have their own teams and they are playing against other universities. Tickets for the AZTECS (name of all SDSU sports teams) football team are roughly 15$.

But there is also an opportunity to get some football tickets for free. During your time in San Diego it is normal that you get to know some guys who are studying at SDSU. Each SDSU student gets a free ticket for each football game. If you know anyone who is studying at SDSU and don’t like to go to the game, just ask him/her for the ticket, that’s mostly no problem. The Aztecs are playing like the Chargers at the Qualcomm stadium and there is also a big show with a drum band, a half time show – it is very nice there.

Basketball

Furthermore SDSU has a very good Basketball team. They are playing at Viejas Arena and it is pretty hard to get tickets for their games. In order to get some it is a precondition that you know a student from SDSU because at most games only they are allowed to buy tickets for the games, or you have to pay a lot of money for the tickets. The San Diegan residents really like their sports teams and they love the Chargers, so get in touch with the American sport, you will really like it.
