Subjects and Timetables at ICMS

Report by Lisa S.

In the following report I will talk about the timetable and subject choices at ICMS.

Normally you choose four subjects, or the subjects are chosen by your university in your home country. In case you can choose your subject on your own, you have about two weeks to change subjects, in case you do not like them.

There is also the possibility to take an additional subject but extra fees apply as the tuition fees are calculated upon courses. As I’m studying in a dual system in Germany, I had to take a fifth subject. Therefore, my timetable during this term consist of MGT101 Managing People and Organization, STA101 Statistics, MKT300 Strategic Marketing Management, FIN201 Finance and MGT300 Strategic Management. In another report, I will talk about the content of those subjects in more detail, in case you might take some of those subjects or you are just curious what to expect.

All subjects consist of one lecture and one tutorial per week, which last 1.5 hours. For me, the lectures and tutorials from one course are on the same day, but this is not always the case. Thus, I have always the lecture first and the tutorial after which I find very convenient.

The timetable is handed out during Orientation Week, so on your first days at the college. When I got my timetable, one subject was missing and one subject was not the one I had chosen. If there are errors in the timetable, there is a possibility to change subjects during Orientation Week. In the end I was lucky to get all the subjects I had wanted as my first choice. Since your chosen subjects might be held at the same time, there is a possibility that you need to take one or two options of your second choice.

Also, I was very lucky to have only three days of university per week and Tuesdays and Fridays off. Most students at ICMS have only three days of university, normally Monday through Wednesday. However, this is not always the case even though it is quite unlikely to have classes on Fridays.

The timetable states that classes take place from 8 – 10am, 10-12 am, 12-2 pm and 3-5pm. However, since classes take only 1.5 hours, the courses start 15 minutes later and end 15 minutes earlier as stated on the timetable. Lunch break consists therefore of only 30 minutes, from 11:45am until 12:15pm. It is quite stressful to eat during lunch break, especially when many people are lining up for food, but it is manageable.

Also note, that it is compulsory to attend all classes at ICMS and the roll is taken in every lecture and tutorial. An attendance of 80% is needed in order to pass a course.
