Tips& tricks for your semester abroad at Westcliff University

Your semester abroad is about to start and the anticipation is growing. In the beginning I was very overwhelmed about what exactly I should pack for 4 months. Here are a few tips from me.

• While I initially thought I‘d only need light summer clothing for California, I quickly realized that long-sleeved clothes are essential too. At Westcliff University, the air conditioning is always on full blast, so it can feel quite chilly indoors—even when it‘s 40°C outside in midsummer. My advice: pack a few sweaters and long-sleeved shirts. In the fall, evenings can cool down quickly once the sun sets, so having warmer layers is a good idea.

• Another tip from me is to do a lot of drugstore shopping before the semester abroad, especially shampoos, cotton pads and other hygiene items are significantly more expensive in America.

• It is also particularly important to have an emergency first-aid kit with you, i.e. disinfectant spray, plasters, ointment etc. are urgently needed.

• Don‘t be afraid to approach classmates on your first day—introducing yourself is the best way to start making friends. Westcliff University also offers great support for connecting with others. Check out the WU Student Life program, which organizes events to help students get to know each other. You can follow their Instagram page (wu_student_life) and subscribe to their monthly newsletter for updates on upcoming events.

• If you‘re going abroad with friends, consider renting an Airbnb together. While the cost may be similar to living alone, you‘ll likely find better-quality apartments in good neighborhoods. Plus, sharing the experience with friends makes it even more enjoyable.

• Lastly, I would like to emphasize again, ENJOY IT!!! Time goes by so fast, so enjoy it and take every opportunity to make friends.
