Thousand Steps Beach

Report  by Isabel S.

San Diego has some beautiful beaches where you can hang out and take a long and relaxing sunbath. But the most beautiful beach I saw in California was the thousand steps beach in Laguna Beach. From San Diego it is about an hour drive and even before you arrive you will drive through beautiful neighborhoods with impressive houses and nice and fancy restaurants and cafés.

Parking at the Beach

When you get there you can just park on the street, but of course only where the curbstone is grey. If it’s red, yellow, green or any other color this means that you are not allowed to park there for a long time or at all. Most of the time, red means no parking, green means fifteen minute parking and white means loading zone. After you have parked, you just walk to the entrance of the steps and you look down to what looks like a steep staircase. Those are definitely not one thousand steps but they are a lot still!

Watersport

Walking down is not the hard part yet. When you are at the bottom you will be amazed by the beautiful white sand and the crystal clear pacific water. The water may look nice but it is actually freezing cold, so when you are planning to surf or skim board there do not forget to take your wetsuit! In comparison to the beaches in San Diego where you can see many surfers and body boarders, the thousand steps beach is more popular for skim boarders because the waves are not really high and the thin water layer on the beach is perfect to hit the skim board.

It is really like paradise and what on top of the landscape there are the beautiful and luxurious mansions up on the cliffs. I recommend going there early because then there won’t be so many visitors and you almost have the beach for yourself. You can walk along the beach until you come to a cave that you can enter. It is really nice to see the ocean crashing through the stone but be careful not to be hit by the water. The beach is really idyllic and you can hang out there with some friends and just enjoy the weather and be amazed by the beauty of nature. You will see a lot of people working out and running up and down the steps. And once you are ready to leave this will be your challenge as well. Walking up those steps is quite an effort but just take your time and you will be just fine.
